The Bilge
The bilge is the lowest point inside the hull, where any water onboard collects — rain, spray, condensation, or a slow leak. Every boat has some water down there; the question is how much, and how fast it's building up. A bilge pump clears it out automatically, but a pump that's cycling constantly is trying to tell you something. Left unnoticed, a rising bilge is one of the more common reasons boats end up in trouble at the marina.
The Battery System
Most boats run on a house battery bank (powering lights, pumps, electronics) separate from the engine starting battery. Batteries degrade over time, and a battery that's slowly failing often shows no obvious symptoms until it's completely flat — usually at the worst possible moment. Voltage monitoring is one of the simplest ways to catch a failing battery weeks before it becomes a problem.

The Anchor and Chain
Your anchor, chain, and rode are what keeps your boat in place. Anchors don't fail often — but conditions change, holding ground varies, and a boat can drag its anchor gradually enough that nobody notices until it's drifted well outside a safe distance. This is especially common overnight, when nobody's actively watching or you are away from your boat doing some exploring.
The Engine and Drivetrain
This covers the engine itself, the fuel system, and whatever gets the power to the propeller — the shaft, sail drive, or outboard leg. Engine temperature and oil pressure are the two numbers that matter most day-to-day; a small deviation from normal is often the earliest warning sign of a bigger issue forming.
Through-Hulls and Seacocks
These are the fittings that let water in and out of the hull deliberately — for engine cooling, drains, and toilets. They're built to be reliable, but they're also one of the few places on a boat where the ocean has a direct path inside if something fails. Most owners check these visually during haul-out, but between services, they're rarely monitored at all.
Navigation and Electronics
GPS, chart plotter, VHF radio, and AIS all rely on a healthy electrical system to function. It's worth remembering that most of your safety electronics are only as reliable as the battery system behind them — which loops straight back to point two.
