Mould, Damp, and Musty Smells: Keeping Your Boat Dry Between Trips

Mould, Damp, and Musty Smells: Keeping Your Boat Dry Between Trips

There's a very particular smell that greets every boat owner at some point — you unlock the cabin after a few weeks away, and it hits you before you're even fully through the door. Somewhere between "wet towel" and "old library book." Congratulations, your boat has been quietly growing a small ecosystem in your absence.

Damp and mould aren't just unpleasant — left unchecked, they'll happily work through cushions, headlining, and timber, turning a cosmetic annoyance into a genuinely expensive one. Here's what's actually going on, and what to do about it.

Why Boats Are Basically Mould Incubators

Think about the conditions mould actually wants: still air, moisture, and a lack of sunlight. Now think about a closed-up cabin, sitting in a marina, for two or three weeks or more at a time. You've accidentally built the perfect little greenhouse — just for the wrong kind of growth.

Condensation is usually the real culprit, not leaks. Warm, humid air meeting a cooler surface (a hull, a window, the inside of a locker) forms moisture even on a boat that's completely watertight. Add zero airflow, and you've got a problem brewing within days.

The Usual Trouble Spots

Lockers and cupboards. Anywhere with poor airflow and items packed in tight is prime mould real estate — especially anything touching the hull directly.

Cushions and upholstery. Foam holds moisture beautifully (annoyingly), and the underside of cushions against a damp settee base is a classic breeding ground nobody checks often enough.

The bilge. A damp bilge doesn't just smell bad — it's often feeding humidity into the whole boat from below, quietly, the entire time you're not there.

Anywhere canvas meets fibreglass. Bimini frames, sail covers, and canvas storage bags trap moisture against surfaces that don't dry out properly in between.

Keeping Ahead of It

A few unglamorous habits go a long way: crack a locker door before you leave, use moisture absorbers in enclosed spaces, and give cushions the occasional airing rather than leaving them jammed against a damp hull liner for months, use a dehumidifier. Good ventilation beats good luck every time.

The Bit You Can't Fix With a Dehumidifier

Here's the catch — you can do everything right and still not know there's a problem building until you're standing in the doorway getting hit by that smell. Damp and rising bilge water often go hand in hand, and both tend to escalate quietly while nobody's aboard to notice.

This is exactly the gap YachtPilot's bilge sensor is built to close. It keeps a continuous eye on water levels in the bilge and sends an alert the moment things start trending the wrong way — so you find out while it's still a five-minute fix, not a full interior refit.
